Verwaltungsgliederung Nordirlands
Seit dem 1. Oktober 1973 besteht Nordirland aus 26 Distrikten. Jeder Distrikt hat einen Rat, der sich um die lokalen Dienstleistungen kümmert. Die 26 Distrikte setzen sich aus 582 Bezirken zusammen. Jeder Bezirk wählt 1 Ratsmitglied. In Nordirland gibt es 582 Ratsmitglieder, und alle 4 Jahre findet eine Wahl statt. Das Wahlsystem, nach dem jeder Ratsmitglied gewählt wird, ist die übertragbare Einzelstimme. Einige der Räte sind als "Borough"- oder "City"-Räte bekannt. Jedes Jahr wählt jeder Rat einen Vorsitzenden. In den Räten "Bezirk" und "Stadt" wird der Vorsitzende als Bürgermeister bezeichnet. Im Stadtrat von Belfast wird der Vorsitzende als Lord Mayor bezeichnet. In "Borough"- und "City"-Räten erhalten bis zu 25% der Ratsmitglieder den Titel "Alderman" (Stadtrat).
