Der Name ist brythonisch-keltisch für "Tal mit dicken Eichen". John Hays setzte den Namen "Derwent River" nur in den oberen Teil des Flusses. Matthew Flinders platzierte den Namen auf dem gesamten Fluss.
Die Ufer des Derwent waren einst von Wäldern bedeckt und von Aborigines besetzt. Europäische Siedler bewirtschafteten das Gebiet, und im 20. Jahrhundert wurden viele Dämme an seinen Nebenflüssen gebaut.
