Erdbebenschutz ist eine Art Basisisolierung zum Schutz von Gebäude- und Nicht-Gebäudekonstruktionen vor Schäden durch starke Erdbeben.
Die seismische Leistung eines Gebäudes kann durch die Reduzierung von Vibrationen verbessert werden. Dies kann durch Dämpfungsmechanismen in der Schwingungstechnik und insbesondere bei der Fundamentisolierung erreicht werden.
Bei sehr nachgiebigen Systemen, wie z.B. isolierten Unterkonstruktionen, mit einer relativ geringen Lagersteifigkeit, aber mit einer hohen Dämpfung, kann jedoch die sogenannte "Dämpfungskraft" bei einem starken Erdbeben die Hauptdruckkraft darstellen. Diese Erkenntnis schuf eine theoretische Grundlage im Erdbebeningenieurwesen für eine dämpfungsfreie Basisisolierungstechnologie, die als Erdbebenschutz bezeichnet wird.
