Die Version für das Master System wurde in Europa im Oktober 1992 veröffentlicht. Die Game Gear-Version wurde in Europa im Oktober 1992 und in Nordamerika und Japan im November 1992 veröffentlicht. Es ist eine Fortsetzung von Sonic the Hedgehog für das Master System und Game Gear.
Die Master-System-Version des Spiels wurde außerhalb Europas und Brasiliens nicht veröffentlicht. Die Version des Master System wurde 2008 für die Wii-Virtual Console veröffentlicht.
